Comments: A superb Classic Three-blade Sow Belly by talented Texas knife maker Rusty Preston. Rusty was mentored by slip-joint magician Bill Ruple, and has come up with his own very appealing variations on these classic pocket-knife themes.

One of the things we like most is the way that Rusty has subtlety modified the old shapes to give them just a little something special and to make them his own. We like them so much we’ve recently added one to our own collection!

Fit and finish are superb, and the blades open and close very smoothly. Also check out the filing or the bolsters and the liners – adding just the right touch to dress up this excellent knife.

We feel the knives are a true value and they are usually sold before we get them on to the web site. Check out one of these classic beauties and you won’t be disappointed!

Comments: Here is a truly remarkable custom knife by the deceased Master Smith Jim Schmidt. Besides making wonderful knives, Jim was best known as one of the early Damascus masters and a mentor to many fine current bladesmiths – including Barry Davis and Dellana to name a few.

Generally Jim’s knives were large and beefy, like the man, but this is one of very few pocket-sized Gentleman’s Folders we’ve ever seen. In fact, we can not think of one Schmidt looking like this in the last 20 years – now that’s rarity! The knife is called “Twinkle” and is #133 made in 1996, smack in the middle of Jim’s Golden Period. It can also be found on page 157 of the Francesco Pachi Jim Schmidt Book.

Here are all of the classic Schmidt details – one of the famous shapes, the bold Damascus, the great back-filing and the wonderful bail. The liners are artfully filed in just the right proportion and the Presentation-grade Black-lip Pearl scales are superb.

Pass up this masterpiece and you may never see another!

In his entire 30 years career Jim made only 225 folders, so calling this little Masterpiece rare is a bit of an understatement. World-class and absolutely irreplaceable!

Comments: Another stunning work of art by the sole-author husband and wife team of Shaun and Sharla Hansen. This superb large Fancy fixed-blade dagger is from the most recent 2024 Art Knife Invitational Show in Las Vegas (AKI) and everywhere you look there are interesting details that catch the eye.

The guard and pommel are hot blued and then inlaid with gold and they perfectly complement the Gem-grade Black Jade handle. The sheath is Hot Blued as well, with German Silver fittings, carved and filigreed, with stainless panel, carved, 24 carat gold inlay decorated with Fantasy Bulino engraving.

Award winners at both Atlanta and New York Shows, members of the Art Knife Invitational (AKI) and the Art in Metal Show (AIM), this team makes only about a dozen knives a year, so they are very tough to come by. Sole authors Shaun and Sharla really do it all

Don’t let this very special piece slip through your hands, it is truly fabulous!

There is really nothing quite like a Lloyd Hale knife. Sporting polished blade, guard and but cap, this knife is an interesting feast for the eye everywhere you look. This is one of the largest and finest Hale knives we have ever had the pleasure to handle!

Unique, and absolutely original, if you are fan of fixed blade, you should have at least one Lloyd Hale knife in your collection.

Vladimir Kolenko Knife – Red Cross Dagger

Fabulous Art Dagger by Russian knife maker Vladimir Kolenko. Mosaic Dragon Skin Damascus, with handle of presentation grade Fossil Mammoth, Sterling Silver, and 14K Gold. A variety of techniques were used to make this fancy dagger including sawing, filing, dapping, soldering, forming, oxidization and texturing.

When asked if there is any special design philosophy behind his knives, talented Russian Knife Maker Vladimir Kolenko likes to say that “knife maker is my hobby and not a job, so each piece of my work becomes personal for me. No two pieces are ever exactly alike. I enjoy the whole process and not just the end product. I guess this is one difference between a hobby and a business.”

Before knife making, as with several other talented artists, Jewelry was Vladimir’s long-standing hobby. Which means before he started making knives, he made all kinds of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. As you can imagine, this work equipped him with a variety of special skills used now in the making of his fantastic and elaborate art daggers. And after more than 10 years of knife making, he still prefers Fossil Mammoth, Natural Stone, Silver and Gold to any other materials.

Although he learned his craft from many people and says that he did not have one particular person who was his teacher, he does admire the work of Zaza Revishvili and Bertie Reitveld. He says “Filigree work by Russian maker Zaza Revishvili is outstanding and is characterized by very detailed and accurate craftsmanship”. And when it comes to South African maker Bertie Reitveld he says “Bertie makes absolutely stunning daggers. And the combination of his mosaic Damascus blades and stone handles make them true works of art.”

Asked which styles of knives he likes to make most he says “I enjoy making a wide range of styles, though I have a particular passion for daggers. I guess it’s the symmetry that makes daggers so attractive to me.”

The annual Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia the only show Vladimir displays at currently. Professionally an MD and PHD, Vladimir is currently an Associate Professor of Cancer Biology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA during his copious free time!
