Tom Overeynder discovered his passion for crafting knives in 1977, inspired by the handmade creations of his father-in-law, a master tool and die maker. Initially crafting seven folders as Christmas gifts for family, Tom soon realized the burgeoning collector market and embarked on a journey of design, creation, and sales that has spanned decades.
After retiring from a 36-year career in the aircraft industry in 2001, Tom transitioned into full-time knife making. Specializing in collector-grade folders while occasionally crafting bowies, chute knives, and more, he meticulously selects materials such as CTS-XHP, PSF-27, and a variety of stainless steels and handle materials, including exotic ivories and stabilized woods.
A stalwart figure in the custom knife making community, Tom was a dedicated member of the Knifemaker’s Guild for over three decades, never missing a show. He’s also a charter member of the Texas Knifemakers Association and a proud member of the CKCA.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tom has garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Beretta Award of Outstanding Achievement in Handmade Cutlery and multiple accolades at the Knifemaker’s Guild Shows and Blade Shows. His collaborations with renowned engravers and artisans have further solidified his reputation as a master craftsman.
In recognition of his exceptional skill and contributions to the craft, Tom was inducted into the Art Knife Invitational in 2016, marking a significant milestone in his career. His dedication to excellence was further honored with the “Buster” award at the 2019 AKI show, celebrating his outstanding body of work.
Beyond knife making, Tom indulges in various hobbies, including flying large-scale RC airplanes, fishing, archery, and avidly following motorsports such as NASCAR, NHRA drag racing, and Moto GP.
