Beyond the Artistry: Custom Knife Maker Steve Johnson

Steve Johnson’s journey into custom knife making began in March of 1966 when he completed his first knife, a cherished piece that still resides with him today. Under the guidance of Gil Hibben, his Boy Scout Explorer Advisor, he was fortunate to receive the opportunity to craft a knife as part of a project. Little did he know then that this endeavor would evolve from a mere project into a lifelong passion and profession.

As time progressed, he found himself immersed in the craft, transitioning from part-time to full-time work. Along the way, he had the privilege of collaborating and learning from esteemed craftsmen such as Harvey Draper, Rod Chappel, Buster Warenski, and Bob Loveless. he owes a debt of gratitude to these mentors, as their guidance and expertise have profoundly influenced both his life and his work. In particular, Bob Loveless’s indelible mark is evident in many of the knives showcased here.

Despite pursuing other endeavors, including earning a college degree and starting a family with his beloved Dorothy, custom knifemaking has remained a steadfast anchor in his life. The passion ignited during his teenage years in the Hibben shop continues to burn brightly decades later.

With over thirty years of experience, he takes pride in crafting knives that exemplify meticulous craftsmanship, characterized by well-defined grind lines, precise fit, and meticulously polished blades primarily fashioned from 154-CM/ATS-34 steel. Every knife he creates presents a personal challenge—an opportunity to strive for perfection and ensure each piece is flawless to the best of his abilities.
