Tim Britton – North Carolina Custom Knife Maker and Craftsman

Occasionally we come across artists who truly deserve more attention from collectors. In the case of Tim Britton and Jack Levin, their craftsmanship is exceptional and worthy of the highest praise.

Tim Britton has been making knives since 1972 and is recognized as the first professional knife maker in North Carolina. Over the decades, he has continually evolved his craft—what he describes as “reinventing himself as a knifemaker” roughly every five years.

Tim’s early work consisted of small, elegant knives, including a stylized version of the Scottish Skean-Dhu, many of which were engraved by Master Engraver Ron Skaggs. Later, his U.S. Marine Corps experience began influencing his designs, leading to a focus on larger tactical fixed blades such as the TERMINATOR and the Jimmy Lile-inspired JIMBO.

That tactical phase was short-lived, and Tim eventually returned to his roots—creating smaller, traditional pattern folding knives with clean lines and refined execution. His latest work has been influenced by makers such as P.J. Tomes, Gene Shadley, Mike Zcherny, and Bill Ruple, while maintaining the hallmarks of Britton’s distinct style: simplicity, balance, and precision.

Tim’s knives stand out for their superb craftsmanship and use of premium natural materials such as Sambar stag and mammoth ivory. He prefers BG42 steel, which complements his focus on durability and performance. His work consistently draws attention at knife shows—where the crowds around his table speak for themselves.

Throughout his career, Tim has collaborated and shared workshops with many of the most respected names in the knife-making world, including Blackie Collins, Frank Centofante, George Herron, Paul Fox, and Howard Viele. His later work with James Batson and Alex Daniels has deepened his mastery of traditional folding knives.

A dedicated member of the American Bladesmith Society, Tim takes great pride in the fact that many Master Smiths personally own and carry his knives—testament to the quality and integrity of his work.

This artist is one of our very talented custom knife dealers, and his craftsmanship continues to inspire both collectors and fellow makers alike.
