Shigeru Tozaki – Custom Knife Maker and Engraver
Shigeru Tozaki, an accomplished Japanese knife maker and engraver, was born in 1947 in Chiba Prefecture, Matsudo City, Japan, where he currently lives with his wife Yuko.
A graphic designer by training, Shigeru discovered the intricate world of custom knife making while recovering from a motorcycle accident in 1987. During his hospital stay, a friend brought him a copy of The Knife Magazine of Japan, and he was immediately captivated by the artistry of knives. Shortly afterward, he began learning knife making and engraving simultaneously.
For his first two years, Shigeru crafted knives entirely by hand using only files. Wanting to refine his skills and achieve a higher level of quality, he pursued formal instruction on the use of the belt grinder and the craft of folding knives under Mr. H. Takahashi. He also taught himself the art of engraving. His favorite knife makers include H. H. Frank, Mr. H. Hirayama, and Mr. H. Shimada.
Shigeru’s preferred steels are ATS-34 and 440C, typically finished with a fine satin polish. Currently, he uses only two power tools—a Burr King Grinder and an electric drill—keeping his process intentionally hands-on. While he occasionally produces fixed-blade knives, his primary focus is on traditionally inspired slip-joint and lock-back folders, each enhanced with his own detailed engraving work. His knives are of original design but clearly reference the best features of classic pocket knives. Typical handle materials include fine jigged bone, with occasional use of wood or mother of pearl. Each knife is paired with a handmade sheath or pouch, carefully crafted by his wife Yuko.
Shigeru and Yuko exhibit their work at several major knife shows in Japan, including the JKG Show, Seki Knife Show, and CFKS Show. In the United States, they currently attend the Blade Show each June in Atlanta and the New York Custom Knife Show each November. Current delivery time for Tozaki’s knives is typically four to six months, though demand is expected to rise as more discerning collectors experience his exceptional craftsmanship firsthand.
Comments on Shigeru Tozaki by Ryuichi Kawamura
“Although he is not well known yet in the US, Shigeru Tozaki is one of the finest knife makers in Japan. He is best known for his outstanding fit and finish, and his ability to engrave his own knives at a very high level. I believe Shigeru will have great success in the US once American collectors have a chance to handle his knives.”
