Salvatore Puddu

Salvatore Puddu – Italian Master Knife Maker and Innovator

Salvatore Puddu, born in 1961 in Quartu S. Elena, near Cagliari on the island of Sardinia, Italy, began his career as a precision mechanic for Bridgestone before becoming a full-time knife maker in 2000. Recognized early on for his three-blade lock-back folder showcased at the Milan Knife Show, Salvatore is now President of the Italian Knife Makers Guild and a member of the German Knifemakers Guild.

Each Puddu knife is crafted strictly one at a time, allowing maximum focus on precision and perfection from start to finish. Though this meticulous process extends delivery times, every detail of a Puddu knife is handmade entirely by Salvatore, ensuring complete control and quality throughout production.

Every part of a Puddu knife is designed and built for function, balance, and longevity, down to the smallest component. Each knife can be completely dismantled for cleaning or adjustment — a testament to Salvatore’s commitment to engineering excellence and user serviceability.

Driven by a passion for innovation, no two knives are ever identical. Each creation features subtle differences and increasing complexity, reflecting Salvatore’s dedication to evolving his art and avoiding creative stagnation. His favorite challenge lies in crafting multi-blade knives, which are incredibly time-intensive to produce. As a result, he limits himself to 15–20 knives per year, with delivery times now measured in years.

Salvatore is among the very few knife makers worldwide capable of creating lock-back multi-blades, and uniquely, he is the only known maker building two-blade lock-backs that open from opposite sides of the frame — a major technical and aesthetic achievement.

This groundbreaking model, known as the Chris-Cross Folder, demonstrates exceptional mechanical ingenuity. When closed, both blades are completely hidden within the frame, making no internal contact whatsoever. This feat requires extraordinary tolerances, extensive assembly time, and the patience of a master craftsman.

Many Puddu knives are further enhanced by engraving from the world’s finest artists, with designs that harmonize with Salvatore’s structural precision to create a finished piece that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Embodying the same philosophy as legendary American knife makers he admires, Salvatore Puddu’s work represents the perfect union of artistry and craftsmanship. Constantly seeking new technical and aesthetic challenges, his creations continue to push the boundaries of custom knife design and secure his reputation as one of the finest master knife makers in the world today.
