A key influence in his early development came through his mentor Kuzan Oda, a knifemaker connected to the legacy of Bob Loveless. This guidance helped Rick refine his skills and understand disciplined knife construction. By 1978, he joined the Knifemaker’s Guild of America and continued producing Loveless-style knives during his early years in the craft.
Over time, Rick shifted his focus to Interframe Lockback folders, a design that became his signature work. In 1990, he established himself among respected makers in this category, including Steve Hoel and Jack Busfield. Over the next 25 years, he refined his designs with a focus on internal strength, smooth action, and clean exterior lines.
In 2017, he designed the Interframe Lockback Automatic Dagger “Dolores,” marking an expansion into more advanced mechanical knife systems. His automatic models became highly sought after by collectors due to their limited production and detailed engineering.
Rick has also collaborated with top engravers worldwide, blending technical knife building with fine artistic engraving. He carefully integrates materials like mother of pearl, jade, and natural stone into his handles, ensuring each knife feels complete in both structure and appearance.
Beyond making knives, he shares knowledge with newer makers, helping support the continued interest in Interframe Lockback designs. Outside his workshop, he enjoys dirt biking across Arizona and Utah and spending time in a simple, outdoor lifestyle.
