Owen Wood – Custom Knife Maker and Designer
Owen Wood became interested in making knives in 1972 and, seven years later, became South Africa’s first professional knife maker.
In 1980, he helped found the Knifemaker’s Guild of Southern Africa and served as its chairman for ten years. As his reputation grew, Owen’s attention turned toward the international knife-making scene, and he has exhibited annually in the United States since 1982, as well as in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy on a less regular basis.
In 1999, Owen and his family moved from South Africa to Denver, Colorado, where he spent two years working for Spyderco in their research-and-development department and managing their Golden, Colorado factory before returning to full-time knife making.
Owen Wood is currently a member of the Art Knife Invitational (AKI), widely regarded as the most prestigious knife show in the world.
Design Philosophy and Artistry
Owen’s approach to design truly sets him apart. He views the knife as a complete, integrated object, designing the blade, handle, scales, bolsters, and pommel as one cohesive work of art. When forging his own steel, he considers how the Damascus pattern will harmonize with other materials and the overall knife shape. Likewise, when selecting materials for bolsters or pommels, he ensures every choice contributes to balance and unity.
This philosophy extends to the scale or handle materials, particularly when they feature strong directional qualities. Owen believes the engraver’s work should complement the overall design, and that collaboration only succeeds when both artists’ ideas align.
Attention to texture, detail, and form is central to his craft. His knives hold a collector’s interest from every angle — shape, color, and texture alike. Hallmarks of his meticulous design include raised liners, chamfered corners, sunken back spacers, decorated pins or rivets, and other fine nuances that distinguish his work in the world of art knives and custom knife making.
