Jack Levin – Innovative Custom Knife Maker and Mechanism Designer

Occasionally, we encounter artists whose work deserves greater recognition from collectors. In the case of Jack Levin and Salvatore Puddu, their craftsmanship and creativity are truly exceptional — worthy of the highest praise.

While the terms “legend” and “master” are often overused, they accurately describe extraordinary knife maker Jack Levin. A lifelong knife enthusiast, Jack crafted his first folding knife at age fifteen in Riga, and for over forty years, he has remained deeply passionate about metalwork and edged art. That passion is reflected in the name of his most recent knife series, Knifemania — a fitting description of his dedication to mechanical and artistic innovation.

Jack holds a degree in Cold Metal Work and spent several years as a military gunsmith, gaining practical expertise that informs his designs. He also holds multiple patents in both Europe and the United States for his unique mechanisms and inventions. Although he has no formal art training, Jack has long studied art history and historic metalwork, spending countless hours researching ancient arms, armor, and technologies. His expertise extends to restoration, where he is widely regarded for his precision and historical knowledge.

This artist is one of our very talented custom knife dealers, and his work exemplifies the highest standards of innovation and craftsmanship in the knife-making world.

Jack’s knife-making philosophy is both practical and artistic. Inspired by the harmony of medieval knives and arms, he believes that every detail must serve a purpose — and that even the most ornate knife should be fully functional. Before constructing a piece, Jack meticulously designs new mechanisms and develops a plan for every phase of production, particularly when working with a brand-new locking or opening system.

Each of his folding knives is an engineering marvel, often composed of 31 or more precision components. Jack carves his frames from a single piece of metal, ensuring they are as flat and strong as possible. He is also a true pioneer — the first known knife maker to design automatic shields that shift position on his folders, a feature previously unseen even on the finest custom knives.

Jack has also invented magnetic locks and folding guards for fixed blades, with nearly every element of his knives serving both decorative and functional purposes.

Despite enduring a three-year hiatus from knife-making due to tendon and ligament injuries, Jack Levin has continued to achieve remarkable success. He is notably the only knife maker known to have won awards at the Blade Show in Atlanta for four consecutive years, demonstrating both resilience and unparalleled creativity.

Below is a list of Jack’s major awards and accomplishments:
