Ron Best – Custom Knife Maker and Master of Integral Blades

Occasionally, we encounter artists whose craftsmanship deserves far greater recognition among collectors. Ron Best, along with Rusty Preston, represents one of these rare talents—an artist whose work stands out for its creativity, precision, and exceptional attention to detail.

Many collectors are already familiar with Ron Best, a talented, self-taught knife maker from North Carolina. A two-time winner of the prestigious W.W. Cronk Award in 2007 and 2008, Ron’s knives have been featured in Blade Magazine and other respected publications within the knife-making community.

Currently a probationary member of the Knifemakers’ Guild, Ron focuses primarily on crafting fully integral fixed blades, though he has expressed interest in exploring custom folding knives in the future. His artistic influences include Edmund Davidson, admired for his stunning integral designs, and Wolfgang Loerchner, known for his extraordinary carving and sculptural work.

Ron typically works with 440C and D-2 steel, incorporating premium inlay materials such as ivory, bone, and various pearls. He is also considering the use of stone inlays to expand the aesthetic depth of his future knives.

With more than nine years of knife-making experience, Ron exhibits his work at major events such as the Blade Show and the Knifemakers’ Guild Show. Each knife is a true work of art — intricately carved, hand-finished, and heat-treated by Ron himself. He avoids automated milling equipment, preferring to complete all carving and shaping with files and sandpaper, ensuring that every piece reflects his unique handcraftsmanship.

Many of his knives are enhanced with engraving by Master Engraver Jere Davidson, adding another layer of refinement to his already exquisite creations.

Perfection remains Ron’s constant pursuit, and his dedication to artistry and technique has established him as one of the most promising makers of highly carved, fully integral knives in the world today. Once you have the opportunity to handle his work, we believe you’ll agree.
