Comments: Knife maker Van Barnett certainly needs no introduction as he was a member of the Art Knife Invitational (AKI) the most elite group of knife makers on the planet for many years. But even the very experienced collector may not have come across the explosion of knife making creativity - The Barnett Time Machine.
In fact this Time Machine, just completed, is the very last 1890s example with Suspended Blade that will ever be made.
A simply stunning amalgam of unusual materials and ideas, this is the finest example of the Steam Punk Genre we have ever seen in a custom knife. Rather than stumble over my own inadequate words I will let the creator describe this masterpiece to you.
All of the pieces in the "Time Machine" series are one of a kind. All parts are fused, soldered, riveted and or bolted together. Materials are brass, copper, bronze, silver, gold, glass, steel, aluminum and on some, my own Damascus. And according to Van, this knife is the very last "Suspension Blade" in the Time Machine series!
The Time Machine knives are designed to look as though they are from the 1890s industrial age, sort of an HG Wells/Jules Verne theme that takes you to a place only you have been inside your mind. Not surprisingly, they are also built to stand the test of time. Everything functions, all of the gears work and turn, the irises open and close and there will be different operating features on each of these knives.
Van no longer takes orders and will create a small number of knives of his choosing every year. This will allow him to make whatever he wants, and that will assure each collector of receiving something rare, exceptional and totally unique.
Once you pick up a Barnett Time Machine you may never be able to put it down
